Slaves

Many of the nominees announced today for the Mercury Music Prize — which honors the U.K. best album — are known quantities in these parts. Jamie xx, Florence + the Machine, Wolf Alice and SOAK have all been in the neighborhood recently; others, like Aphex Twin, are established. Which brings us to Slaves, the duo of stand-up drummer Isaac Holman and guitarist Laurie Vincent, who won’t do their first American headlining tour until early December. Bless the living ghost of “Anarchy in the U.K.,” Slaves’ “Are You Satisfied?” is some kinda punk album. Known for their frenetic live shows during which they spend as much time in the crowd as on stage, Slaves hark back to the days punk rock was about class warfare. Oh, and Miguel covered Slaves’ “Hey” for the BBC, and that was strange.
