It began innocently enough, with a reunion show in February of 2014 that saw L.A. trio Failure reuniting almost 18 years after the fantastic “Fantastic Planet” was released. Then more shows, and more, and wider acclaim, and then this year’s gobsmacking, 18-track album “The Heart Is a Monster.” So Tuesday night’s hometown show at the Regent Theater felt like the big climax — Greg Edwards, Ken Andrews and Kellii Scott, joined by guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, raging long into the night and playing almost all of their new album and dropping in “Fantastic Planet” favorites such as “Dirty Blue Balloons,” “Smoking Umbrellas,” “Pillowhead,” “Another Space Song” and concert-ender “Daylight.” There was a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” in the encore, too, but drenched by Failure’s expansive space-rock the crowd got precious little silence on this night.
Failure was supported by resurgent Texans … And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead and long-running Chicago rockers Local H.
