Matt Vasquez is busy. The frontman of the Southern California-bred quintet Delta Spirit moved from Brooklyn to Austin moved earlier this year, and he and his wife Marthe welcomed a son, Thor, into the world. He’s toured behind band’s fine fourth album “Into the Wide,” released last September, and on Nov. 14 the Delta Spirit-curated Outpost Fest goes off in Santa Ana. And now, under his full name Matthew Logan Vasquez, he’s going solo — and going for it. His debut “The Austin EP” will be out Nov. 3, with the full-length “Solicitor Returns” to follow in the new year.
The EP is said to have an 18-minute psych-rock opener, but for now we’ll focus on the first single, the rager “Everything I Do Is Out.” If, as he professes, the solo project is simply an effort to bust open his rocker’s vein, Vasquez nails it here. “This song was the catalyst for the whole solo project,” he told Paste magazine. “The song is about my disdain for certain parts of music industry and what it does to people. It’s also about maintaining the mentality that made me love rock ’n’ roll in the first place. My only intention with this music is to play it in bars with my friends. I want to care less about caring at all.” The video is a truly DIY affair; he animated it himself and portrays all the musicians. Vasquez is certainly not the first person to caterwaul that “rock ’n’ roll will never die,” only the latest. Sometimes it needs to be repeated.
