Art rappers Open Mike Eagle, née Michael Eagle II, and Serengeti, née David Cohn, both attended Southern Illinois University (along with comedian Hannibal Buress), but the two haven’t collaborated since the track “Universe Man” from Eagle’s 2012 album “4NML HSPTL.” Fear not, dear readers, for the duo have teamed up for a new project called Cavanaugh, and will be releasing the album “Time & Materials.” The nine-track affair will feature verses from friends Busdriver, Hemlock Ernst, aka.Sam Herring from Future Islands, and P.O.S., and is out Nov. 20. On the Bandcamp page, Cavanaugh’s moniker appears to be metaphorically derived from a building of the same name in Detroit, Florida, that was mandated to house “both luxury condominium units available for private ownership and section 7 housing… Via separate entrances the Cavanaugh building services two very different populations. And though the lifestyles of the residents vary, each unit relies on the same system of pipes and wiring and are serviced by the same crew. Mike and Dave have a combined 14 years of experience in Cavanaugh maintenance.” The first song to emerge is “Screen Play,” also produced by Open Mike Eagle, where they trade off witty barbs such as Geti’s “Had this one chick and she would not listen / Went to the bank, all my money was missing / Supposed to pay my tax but she went out dancing / Played me for the fool I was still romancing,” and Eagle’s “I might lose it, truly let go / Kick the train door and sue the metro / Buy new software and do electro / And start to feel weird cuz I’m too successful.” Peep the moody B&W video below.
