Video: Metric, ‘The Governess’

Canadian rockers Metric’s new album “Pagans in Vegas” is not only the most pop-leaning of the quartet’s six albums, it’s also their most reverential, recalling a host of hitmakers from the 1980s. Released in September, it finds singer Emily Haines at her most poignant, whether leading a dance-pop charge or lamenting, as in the tune “Governess,” that “guilt, she is the governess that guides me back to greed.” No surprise, then, that the Lauren Graham-directed for the song is set in Las Vegas and the surrounding desert. The album is part of a body of work that the band — Haines, James Shaw, Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott-Key — wrote last year in Shaw’s studio in Toronto. It turned out to be two albums’ worth of material, the band explains, “across two major musical veins.” It will be interesting to hear Part II.
