Washington native Skylar Funk originally moved to Southern California to study the environmental sciences at Pomona College, and after graduation has combined his work with Merritt Graves in the indie-pop band Trapdoor Social with campaigns for sustainability, such a mounting solar-powered concerts. In the background, Funk has a batch of solo material he’s developed the past couple of years, which will culminate in the release of an EP. Titled, appropriately, “Sunrise,” it was made with the help of Alex Pfender of yOya and Jack Zoephel and features Funk’s folk-pop at its most endearing. The first single “Sealed With a Kiss” is bittersweet — the upside is that the singer gets a letter from a girl every week. The downside is he hasn’t read them.
