Every so often a new female voice emerges on the scene that cuts through the bubblegum nonsense. So meet Kaity Dunstan, a.k.a. Cloves, a 19-year-old Australian who just released her debut EP, “XIII,” on Interscope Records. After being bitten by the music bug, she began performing with her sister in Melbourne pubs at a mere 13 years old. Now based in London, she cites Amy Winehouse as her main influence and professes to be more concerned with creating an amazing album than rising to fame. Even though Cloves is just getting started, her songs are all the rage on online streaming services, and singles “Frail Love” and “Don’t You Wait” have received airplay from BBC’s Radio 1. Thanks, in part, to co-writers Justin Parker (Lana Del Ray, Sia) and Rich Cooper (Tom Odell, Mumford and Sons), “XIII” is a sentimental indie nerd’s dream. Packed with evocative vocals, captivating melodies and backed by gorgeous, simplistic music, songs like “Frail Love” will leave behind a trail of tears. A tender ballad about forgiveness, Cloves sings, “But I can’t live it like I’m living / I can’t live a lie / I’m giving up more than I should / Forgive me for my frail love.” Pleasant, pretty and reminiscent of Lana Del Ray, every track can give even the coldest heart “the feels.” Happy crying … I mean, listening.
