Premiere: Astra Heights, ‘You Got the Heart’

It’s been a long road for L.A. rockers Astra Heights, and a slow road back. The band, formed by a band of Morales brothers in Houston early last decade, released their major-label debut, the Britpop- and glam-inspired collection of classic rock, “Good Problems,” in 2007. At the the time, 1) major-label roads were bumpy, and 2) classic rock was about as fashionable as the thought of a third term for George W. Bush. Interest waned as the band scuffled over the next few years, dishing out a handful of independent releases while its members either took a break from music or plied their trade in other bands. Now, with a lineup of Mark (vocals), James (bass) and Timothy Morales (multi-instrumentalist) and guitarist Bernard Yin, they have retooled under the guidance of producer/composer Yoav Goren of Immediate Music. Astra Heights’ new album “Danger for Beginners,” which features Josh Freese on drums, will be out this week on Imperativa Records. The single “You Got the Heart” gushes with the bravado of epic cinema, or old-school arena-rock. Or both. After what Astra Heights has endured, it’s remarkable to hear them this optimistic.
