The Chris Robinson Brotherhood show at the El Rey Theatre on Wednesday night harked back to the days of hippies and jam bands and artists with deep enough catalogs — and the musical chops — to carry the night all by themselves. Led by Black Crowes frontman Robinson, who started the project back in 2011, the band roared through two sets of music that included three Black Crowes songs, a Dylan cover (“She Belongs to Me”), a Carl Perkins cover (“Boppin’ the Blues”), Roy Brown’s “Good Rocking Tonight” (which became an Elvis Presley single) and songs from the Brotherhood’s three albums. The long evening of soulful, psychedelic blues ended surprisingly, with a cover of “Lonesome L.A. Cowboy,” originally by New Riders of the Purple Sage.
