“Headstrong Mama” T-shirts were the merch item du jour on Tuesday night at the Fonda Theatre, where Arizona-bred, L.A.-based songstress Zella Day was every bit that and more. She was returning to her home base after a long autumn of headlining shows behind her breakout album “Kicker.” “Headstrong Mama,” of course, references in lyric in her song “Hypnotic,” which she saved until next-to-last in her 13-song set. During the show, Day spoke of her love for the American Southwest and her affection for Clint Eastwood (hooray for the vaguely Western song “The Outlaw Josey Wales”), and after kicking off the show with the early singles “Sweet Ophelia” and “1965,” she shouted out to the big crowd “Let’s get high!” before playing her current single “High.” All the new album’s tracks got their moment in the light, as Day wound up the show with the dancey “Mustang Kids.” Harriet opened the show with a strong set of material from their forthcoming full-length.
