Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, ‘Hell’

“Hell” sounds perhaps like the least Pains of Being Pure at Heart song ever — we’re pretty sure that if anybody dropped 3 bucks on the new EP, it was for the other two songs, the New York indie-poppers’ cover of James’ “Laid” and another cover, a cool take on Felt’s “Ballad of the Band.” But as you’d guess from the title, “Hell” is a slightly sinister ditty, which frontman Kip Berman says is “about how insufferable performances of sensitivity are when there’s a good song playing and someone you want to dance with.” Which is probably not as a good of a backgrounder as the verse: “I know you had such good intentions / when you took my idle hand / what came next, well I think you can guess / it didn’t end well / we’re going to hell.” The video for the song, which features Jacqueline Caruso, Luis Pelanco and Leah Petrakis, was filmed on 16mm film by Sarah Halpern. Hell, apparently, is where everything is desaturated and stylists take the day off.
