Ra Ra Riot know how to get the New Year started. Why release a new single the old-fashioned way when you can sneak it into a New Year’s Resolution playlist, entitled “Year of Absolutely,” on Spotify? On Jan. 1, the Brooklyn band shared “Absolutely” as the follow-up single to “Water,” a collaboration track with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij. The danceable — and even borderline annoyingly catchy — single was produced by Ryan Hadlock (Vance Joy, The Lumineers, Blonde Redhead) and is leading up to the release of Ra Ra Riot’s fourth studio album, “Need Your Light,” out Feb. 19 via Barsuk Records. The indie-pop band encouraged their fans to create their own New Year’s playlists using the hashtag #YearOfAbsolutely, so that the band can incorporate tracks from those playlists onto their own — a clever way to party with their fans … minus the alcohol. Take away the playlist and the promise of a new year, and you’re left with a buoyantly optimistic song that brings the party back to the Riot. It encompasses the kind of cheery disposition that belongs in a car commercial or in a theme song for a classic sitcom. One thing’s for certain: “Absolutely” sticks, unlike those pesky New Year’s resolutions.
