Ears Wide Open: CFM

Charles Francis Moothart II plays guitar as if he’s saving the world one riff at a time. Now the longtime Ty Segall sideman is stepping out of the shadows, and saving keystrokes by doing it under the name CFM. After holing up in his Mount Washington abode, Moothart has emerged with a solo full-length, “Still Life of Citrus and Slime,” due April 8 on In the Red Records. Fans of Fuzz, Segall and Mikal Cronin — all of whom have benefited from Moothart’s talents — won’t be disappointed in the first CFM single, the raucous, laser-guided “Lunar Heroine,” which struggles mightily to distinguish itself from this era’s ocean of garage-rock. Moothart has recruited Michael Anderson as guitarist, Tyler Frome as bassist and Thomas Alvarez (Audacity) as drummer for his live quartet, which kicks off a 22-date tour supporting Segall tonight.
