Singer-songwriter Matt Popieluch has been doing business as Big Search for five-plus years, exploring the nether reaches of psychedelic folk with the singular, pleading tenor L.A. fans have heard since his days with Foreign Born. The lush new song “Please Do Not Explain” appears on a compilation recently released by new Columbia Records-affiliated imprint founded by Danger Mouse, 30th Century Records. The “30th Century Records Compilation Volume 1” also features new songs from Autolux, Dan Auerbach’s the Arcs and newbies such as Apache Sun, Maybird and Waterstrider. Meanwhile, director Ryan Daniel Browne’s video for “Please Do Not Explain” belies the song’s pastoral feel; Popieluch ascends to mysterious heights in an urban forest. How high he gets will be determined when the new Big Search album arrives later this year.
