The specialty cocktail of the night was the “Bitter Strange.” The music of the night was “Better Strange.”
And the occasion on Thursday was the James Supercave album-release party at the cozy new downtown venue Resident, where the L.A. quintet sounded every bit as transcendent as they did in November when they previewed their debut at the Echo.
The band performed much of the album to a crowd of mostly friends and longtime fans, and they mixed in a David Bowie cover, after which frontman Joaquin Pastor put his hands together in prayer and looked skyward in a moment of supplication, as if to say, “I hope that was OK.” It was.
In April the band begins a nationwide tour in support of Wild Belle, which brings them back to the Echoplex on May 13.
