After a rumor earlier this week, and premature Spotify leak yesterday, Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar released a new eight-song collection called “untitled unmastered” on Thursday night. Details continue to emerge today, with Lamar tweeting earlier that the collection is “Demos from To Pimp A Butterfly. In Raw Form. Unfinished. Untitled. Unmastered.” They were recorded between 2013 and 2016. A couple of these tracks have seen the light of day before on late-night talk shows, with “untitled 03 | 05.28.2013” debuting on one of the final episodes of “The Colbert Report” in 2014, while “untitled 08 | 09.06.2014” was performed on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” earlier this year, and was previously known as “Untitled 2.” “Untitled 05 | 09.21.2014.” is a somber jazzy number that features Josef Leimberg on trumpet, Terrace Martin on keys and sax, frequent collaborator Sounwave on drums and Thundercat on bass, with Jay Rock, Punch, and Anna Wise joining on vocals. Sounwave also confirmed that Swizz Beatz and Alicia Key’s 5-year-old son Egypt produced the second half of “untitled 07 | 2014 – 2016” and that Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Adrian Younge co-produced “untitled 06 | 06.30.2014,” which also features Cee-Lo Green on vocals. Commence unpacking the density below.
