Flowers, inflatable alien dolls, crowd-surfing, “Dump Trump” signs, a plea to get out and vote and, oh yeah, some rock music — Thursday’s Best Coast show at the Fonda Theatre had a little bit of everything.
The sold-out night was the third to the last stop on the “Summer Is Forever II” tour featuring Bethany Cosentino, Bobb Bruno and gang along with Wavves and Cherry Glazerr. Owing to the enthusiastic hometown crowd for the three bands, this one felt every bit like one of those “California Nights” that Best Coast salute on their latest album.
There was plenty of give-and-take — someone tossed a bra onstage during Wavves’ set, and Nathan Williams wore it on his head. Wavves threw blow-up alien dolls in the audience in return. While Chery Glazerr’s Clementine Creevy fretted that her “boobs may fall out,” bassist Sean Redman reminded the crowd: “So we’re not like a political band or anything but just go out and fuckin’ vote. This year? Please? The youth [have been] severely under represented. … All you have to do is fuckin’ vote. That’s all.”
Cosentino, who threw flowers into the crowd during “Boyfriend,” reiterated that theme later, also noting a sign in the crowd. “What does that say? Dump Trump! Yes. Oh by the way, you can register to vote here, headcount.org. Fuck Donald Trump! We’re Best Coast.”
