When Chicago-bred Company of Thieves parted company in early 2014 after two albums (2009 and 2011) for Wind-Up Records, principals Genevieve Schatz and Marc Walloch launched work on their own projects. Working under the mononym Genevieve, she released the well-received pop EP “Show Your Colors” in 2014. Walloch, meanwhile, began making music as SPILL — but was diverted from devoting himself fully to the project owing to his duties as a sideman in AWOLNATION and Juliette Lewis’ band. SPILL’s forthcoming album is titled “Through the Seasons,” a stylistically diverse, emotionally rich collection with Walloch’s world-weary vocals at the center of some warm production. The single “Seasons,” featuring trumpeter Spencer Ludwig (Capital Cities) and drummer Jay McMillan (Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness), has a familiar moving-on melancholy, with Walloch wistfully noting “I wish some things lasted / through the seasons.” If SPILL is Wallaoch’s long-awaited new beginning, it’s an impressive start.
