Los Angeles rapper Open Mike Eagle is set to release his collaborative album with U.K. producer Paul White entitled “Hella Personal Film Festival” this Friday via Mello Music Group, and after releasing two previous singles from it, “Check to Check” and opener “Admitting The Endorphin Addiction,” they’ve dropped its final single “I Went Outside Today.” Of the track, Mike says, “It’s a song about going outside for the first time in a while. It’s from the perspective of being able to be excited about little things after not having had the strength to be around people. It’s the feeling of emerging from solitude.” White’s production is sunny and simplistic, built on a dusty soul loop and garnished with a few other samples, including “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Titanic.” The straightforward beat allows Mike, joined by fellow underground rapper and guest Aesop Rock, to flex their lyrical prowess by dropping a verse each, sans hook. Standout lines include Mike’s “I’m trying to relive days that I couldn’t grab / I looked up what Lena Dunham said and I shouldn’t have,” and Aesop’s “Yeah, I feel so uppity / Peter Piper picked the purple stuff before the Sunny D.” Peep with your ears below, and pre-order the album here.
