Neko Case plus k.d. lang plus Laura Veirs equals Case/Lang/Veirs, or case/lang/veirs if they prefer. As triumvirates go, it sounds sounds pretty triumphant, judging from the two songs out so far from the “case/lang/veirs” album, due June 17 via Anti-. The trio explains that the collaboration started on a whim a couple of years ago when lang sent Case and Veirs and email suggesting they make music together. Recorded over a 2 1/2-year span in Portland (where lang and Veris live), their 14-song album mixes the talents and sensibilities, with the trio sharing writing and vocal duties. The first single, the string-drenched “Atomic Number,” received a widespread embrace, and the follow-up, the Veirs-penned “Best Kept Secret,” strikes a decidedly upbeat chord. So who’s the “best kept secret in Silver Lake?” In an interview with the Lenny Letter, they explain that it’s guitarist Timothy Young, a longtime player with Veirs, not to mention the likes of Beck, Brian Reitzell, Bill Frisell, Rufus Wainwright, Jessie Baylin, Sam Phillips, Mike Watt, Sophie B. Hawkins and a host of others. So Young has the distinction of playing on a track that was written about him. Secret’s out.
