Welsh trio the Joy Formidable roared into the Roxy Theatre on Monday night for the first of two shows celebrating the release of their new album “Hitch.” Their 14-song set, though, was divided almost evenly from their three full-lengths, kicking off with their 2008 jam “The Greatest Light Is the Greatest Shade” and including the crowd-pleasing “I Don’t Want to See You Like This” and “Whirring.” Frontwoman Rity Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd started the encore with an acoustic version of the new song “The Brook,” performed in the crowd.

The light-hearted part of show came when Bryan poked fun at drummer Matthew James Thomas, who spent a full day at the dentist prior to the show. Apparently it was his first trip to the dentist in 18 years. “Don’t worry Mr. Thomas,” she said, “your gums should grow back!”

The crowd was every bit as excited for U.K. quartet Everything Everything, who opened with a high-energy set in support of their album “Get to Heaven.”
