Photos: Prince Rama, Dinner, and Drinking Flowers at Resident

Brooklyn “now age” band Prince Rama is touring behind their latest album, “Xtreme Now,” and they brought plenty of neon and charm to the Resident stage. Singer Taraka Larson spoke to the audience between songs with an interesting man-voice effect that made her comments about eating at Cafe Gratitude, sitting in traffic and requests for kisses just that much more surreal. Accompanied by her drummer-sister Nimai and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Sciaino (aka Ghostdad), the trio never stopped hopping around. Seeing this band always makes me want to go to the gym. They’re just so fit and nimble and the music really lights a fire under your butt in the best pseudo-spiritual slash aerobic sense.
Danish producer Dinner, aka Anders Rhedin, played before Prince Rama. From his long thoughtful pauses gazing over the audience, to his bouncy, jagged dance moves and deep voice, there is a lot to enjoy from his presence. At one point he asked if there was a state where he could marry both girls from Prince Rama. Someone shouted, “Idaho!” He responded, “But I like L.A. much better, it is the land of palm trees and burritos.” It was charming and he won the audience over. At the end he made everyone sit on the floor, close their eyes and think about where they are in life. The audience obliged and seemed to genuinely accept his soothing words.
Local band Drinking Flowers played first. Their setup was neat: three guitars, bass, and two guys working some sort of beats-generator from behind a case instead of drums. The mystery men might have been working a drum machine, a tape machine, or just a keyboard, but not knowing made it interesting. At their best, the band’s music swelled to a full-throttle shoegaze wash of sound, and the electronic beats complimented the noisy peaks. All the band wore some form of gold attire, each fitting their personality, some with black lipstick, and they never smiled. Perhaps it’s not appropriate to smile when your music concerns black Mondays and morose moments.
