Ears Wide Open: So Below

So Below

The mystical EP from So Below is for dancing in the dark, ethereal yet propulsive. The four-song debut is the work of native New Zealander Madeline North, who was part of too-short-lived Strange Babes with countrymen Sam McCarthy (Kids of 88) and Leroy Clampitt (Taste Nasa). Both contribute production here, but North’s principal collaborator is Aaron Short of the Naked & Famous (with whom Strange Babes toured). Like she suggests in the song “Luna,” North’s airy vocals pull you under, or away from the palpable. Like so much synth-pop these days, it’s only transitory, but it’s intoxicating nonetheless.
