Ears Wide Open: Nyxe

Nyxe is the latest incarnation of local artist Pam Shaffer, who felt the new direction of her music warranted a fresh, nocturnal-inspired moniker. “Nyxe” means the embodiment of night in ancient Greek, “technically in the vocative dual declension,” smarty-pants Shaffer says. “A lot of the songs came to me when I couldn’t sleep. I’ve had insomnia for years and love writing in middle of the night. I wanted a name that went beyond my personal moniker and was more attached to the songs and my process. The songs are very different than those I write for piano and violin so I wanted to separate them. It was my best friend Ciscandra of the band Nostalghia that suggested Nyx and I looked up how it was declined in Ancient Greek to find Nyxe.” Shaffer describes herself as “a space witch singing lullabies from sunken pirate ships.” There’s a cinematic, almost-Disney quality to the latest single off her forthcoming EP, “Phases.” In fact, as it was playing this morning, my boyfriend accused me of watching “Pocahontas” instead of doing work. Perhaps if Pocahontas travels to outer space and has to fight vampires as she seeks to be reunited with astronaut John Smith, who is currently stranded on an asteroid spiraling off into the galaxy, “Without You” would fit perfectly on the soundtrack.
