Irene Diaz could sing about the mail, the weather or put a melody to instructions on assembling a refrigerator and it would be fine because her voice is so dang pretty it turns any word into delicious honey. Her 2013 single “Crazy Love” is a dazzler. She opens her voice and butterflies dance on clouds, warm sunsets linger at the beach, and angelic hands rub cake all over my brain. Diaz specializes in love songs, mostly for guitar and piano, usually accompanied by Carolyn Cardoza on ukulele. Her latest single, “This Cannot Be,” is a folky song for broken hearts produced by Chicano Batman’s Eduardo Arenas. She hits plenty of pretty notes and turns in the melody; her voice has a country tingle made for teardrops.
