Egyptian Lover’s colorful, super-saturated video, made by Zev Deans, looks like it was dug up out of a late-night public access channel archive from the 1980s that a person would only find streaming at a strange hotel room somewhere in outer space. Featuring cameos by a who’s who of Stones Throw artists and friends including Folerio, Dam-Funk, Mild High Club, Geneva Jacuzzi, and Lady Tigra, the video for “I Cry, Night After Night” matches his strange, touching lyrics with a heavy dose of cool absurdity. For the song, Egyptian Lover took inspiration from an unexpected source, Dean Martin’s “The Middle Of The Night Is My Crying Time.” He says, “I loved how Dino could be soft but such a ladies man. I wanted to be him.” The song appears on the hip hop pioneer’s recently released collection of ’80s tunes, “Egyptian Lover Anthology, 1983-1988,” which comes with a 20-page book of archival photos, liner notes and detailed track history. For funk and hip-hop fans, this is a must buy, as it traces Egyptian Lover’s ascension from a cassette collector to beat maker to rapper and ultimate superstar status. Oh, the 1980s, where would be without you?
