Blank Blue

Blank Blue emerged in 2006, when Elvin Estela, aka DJ Nobody, gave his Fingerprints co-worker Niki Randa a CDR of beats and tracks he was working on as a follow up to “Pacific Drift,” his 2003 release on Ubiquity Records. He needed a vocalist and everyone told him, “Niki can sing!” The addition of her enchanting voice fit the soundtrack to his foggy nightmares beautifully. During a lunch break they visited a local bookstore, flipped to a random page, and Niki put her finger on the phrase “blank blue.” The band was born and “Western Water Music-Vol. II” came out in 2007. Drummer Andres Renteria joined after the duo’s first show, and they soon found themselves on tour with Dublab and Gaslamp Killer through Europe. Then came a tour with Prefuse 73 and School Of Seven Bells, after which they added bassist Brian Martinez to the fold, and the chemistry was complete. They began writing more songs and playing a lot up until 2011 when, for one reason or another, everyone’s focus shifted towards other projects.

This past December, Gaslamp Killer asked if Blank Blue would be down to get back together and play his New Year’s Eve party. OK, sure, why not, for fun. Then came an invitation to play Low End Theory, again, for fun … followed by an opportunity to open two shows for Melody’s Echo Chamber, and suddenly, it’s just happening. Thank goodness for fate and chance. Blank Blue is back with new music and will be releasing a self-produced EP soon, called “Invisible Threads.” The first taste is “Grey,” an epic jam that sinks into every sinew of your brain like melting candy.
