All that was missing was the giant “W” logo behind the band, and maybe a few thousand more people.
Weezer played a cozy club show on Monday night at the Troubadour, juggling songs from their 10th full-length, “The White Album,” with their biggest hits in front of a packed-to-the-rafters crowd heavy on fans wearing the red Weezer fan club T-shirts.
Illuminated from behind the Troubadour’s signature neon, Rivers Cuomo and gang kicked the show off with the lead track from the new album, “California Kids.” It was the first of four songs — “LA Girlz,” “Do You Wanna Get High?” and “Thank God for Girls” were others — from the new album. That was as many as the number of the songs they played from their debut “Blue Album,” 22 years old next month.
On a night of crowd-pleasing moments, one of the biggest was the sing-along during “El Scorcho,” when Cuomo let the crowd take over.
The show came on the day the lineup for the KROQ Weenie Roast (May 14 at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre) was announced; it includes Weezer along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage, Empire of the Sun, Panic! at the Disco, the Lumineers, Cold War Kids, Miike Snow, Fitz and the Tantrums and more.
