Ears Wide Open: Bokonon

Coed quartet Bokonon is the latest L.A. band to put a California twist on British shoegaze and psychedelia. Their debut album “Prism Cinema” came out last month after a trying time during which the band lost its works-in-progress because of a hard-drive crash. The spacious, trippy compositions are the work of singer-guitarist Elvis Galvez, synth player Monique Luna, bassist-singer Ray Montes and drummer Tianna Nicole. Galvez and Nicole once played in the post-rock outfit Aftergloam, and here Bokonon (named for the fictitious religion invented by Kurt Vonnegut in his novel “Cat’s Cradle”) they ride Montes’ bass lines into the night sky, where, synths twinkling, their dreamy psych-rock can be mesmerizing.
