James Blake took a substantial portion of his new album “The Colour in Anything” for a test-drive Monday, playing a riveting, sold-out show at the cozy Belasco Theater. The 27-year-old Englishman, who released that album (his third) on May 6, began the night with 2013’s “Life Round Here” before playing the the new “Choose Me,” commenting that he likes playing his hardest songs early so that the rest of the show seems easy.

He certainly made it look easy Monday, playing a total of nine new songs. Moses Sumney and Connan Mockasin added an even more ethereal air to the proceedings, guesting on the new album’s title track five songs into the set and then returning at the end to lend their voices to “Modern Soul.”
