Stream: Big Search, ‘Can’t Understand the News’

Matt Popieluch is a wealthy man, if the currency is “Life Dollars.” The singer-songwriter, who makes music as Big Search, explains the title of his forthcoming third album this way: “Life Dollars are accrued by attending matinees and barbecues, taking stoned naps, water sports, romantic escapes and all the other things you think you haven’t earned. Big Search rejects the monetizing of self worth, thus Life Dollars can not be measured by numbers, only vague piles.”
Those who’ve followed Popieluch and his voice since his days in Foreign Born and the Cave-Ins — not to mention contributions to likes of Fool’s Gold, Papercuts, Dream Legal, Cass McCombs, Glasser, Taken By Trees and Sky Ferreira — will feel a little richer hearing “Can’t Understand the News,” the first single from the album. It’s as evocative as Big Search’s previous, more stripped-down, work but lushly produced by Rob Barbato in sessions that featured guitarist Dan Iead, drummer Garrett Ray (Foreign Born, Fool’s Gold) and the producer himself on bass. Perfect for a guy whose voice seems to turn every song into either an anthem or a hymn.
“Life Dollars” will be out Aug. 19 via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records.
