“666” is the dreamiest song ever to have sprung from the devil’s underbelly. Ash Reiter’s voice wanders sweetly between succinct evil images like its strolling through wildflowers or eating clouds of cotton candy. Sugar Candy Mountain‘s current sound results from Reiter smoking more weed, acquiring many psychedelic pedals, guitarist Bryant Denison becoming a wizard, he performs in a witch hat surrounded by three amps, and drummer Will Halsey honing his production chops. Recorded between the fall of 2014 and spring of 2015 with Papercuts’ Jason Quever in San Francisco and the band’s own Oakland studio, the new album, “666,” comes out July 8 via PIAPTK Records. The band now lives in Joshua Tree, but are making their way up to Hickey Fest this summer, an event founded by Reiter herself, playing wineries, coffee shops and museums along the way.
Next time someone says nothing good can come from smoking grass, play them this song.
