The video for “Xed Eyes” does strange things to the brain. It seems innocent enough, a visual soup of melting candles, eye balls, cartoon faces morphing and throbbing, dogs shaking hands with their tongues, normal stuff, but stare long enough and flashbacks set in of whatever drug you abused the most in the past. But that’s the point isn’t it, the band living up to their name. It’s nice to have them back. Graham Walsh and Brian Borcherdt performed actively as Holy Fuck from 2005 to 2010, up until releasing their full-length “Latin.” Then they took a long break and started working with other bands, such as Dusted and Etiquette and Lids, and producing for Viet Cong, METZ and Alvvays, and it seemed Holy Fuck was gone for good. Little did we know they spent the last two years working on a new album, aptly titled “Congrats,” which saw release through Innovative Leisure on May 27. “When you’re sitting still in a van and staring out the windows, you start to dream about all the other things you want to do,” says Borcherdt. “This album is exactly what we couldn’t do then.”
“Congrats” features the same lineup as “Latin:” Borcherdt, Walsh, Matt “Punchy” McQuaid, and Matt Schulz, paring things down to their favorite low-budget hi-tech toys. Walsh says, “This record is almost a beginning-the first stage of a new way for us.”
