The video for the Zella Day single “Mustang Kids” follows a group of teenage outsiders constrained by small-town life. It was filmed in a small town — the Inyo County enclave of Bishop, which at a population of about 4,000 is about the same size as Day’s hometown of Pinetop, Ariz. Director Tim Mattia (who has worked with the 1975, Halsey and Cage The Elephant) portrays the “mustang kids” — a musician, a dancer, a painter, a photographer and a dancer — embracing their artistic pursuits and seeking a way out of their dreary lives. Day says of the song: “I’m a Mustang Kid along with all of the rest of you. This is our story of triumph with all of the odds stacked against us. Some of us have different upbringings, belief systems, financial situations, and family dynamics but we all have one very serious thing in common and it’s that each of us have a soul purpose.” The song, which was featured in the trailer for the film “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” appears on Day’s breakout debut released last year, “Kicker.”
