The cinematic pop of L.A. trio Mothlight doesn’t merely rely on a little reverb or a few effects for its sonic uplift. The band’s prismatic effervescence is the result of layers and layers of melody and harmony, all on display in their latest single, “Day/Night.” It’s like watching time-lapse images of the most beautiful sunrise/sunset you’ve ever witnessed. The band — Matt Billings, Grant Stevens and Andrew Smith — grew out of Billings’ bedroom project to release the full-length “Calico” in 2014, and the new single will appear on a to-be-titled full-length they have planned for the fall. “Day/Night: is a “juxtaposition of feelings of longing for a past lover in the early morning and late at night,” Stevens told Consequence of Sound, where the song premiered. “It’s about how the time of day affects what memories are triggered, what we choose to keep with us. The experience of another person becomes filtered and blurred into a collage of minutiae.”
