When Tim Presley and Cate Le Bon came out with their Drinks project, it became clear these two have the musical chemistry of twins separated at birth. Both of them thrive on weird guitar, they relish the angular, playing rawboned notes like they’re falling off a capsizing ship and landing in a strange but pleasing pile of music. And so it comes as a delightfully unsurprising surprise that the White Fence frontman is releasing a solo album and that Cate Le Bon produced it. “The Wink” comes out Sept. 16 via Drag City, and features 12 tracks that Le Bon picked out of a mountain of Presley’s demos. Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa was brought in to play drums and Samur Khouja did the engineering. Lead single “Clue” sounds like a music robot malfunctioning in the right way.
