Five years after emerging from the Binary Entertainment trio NightWaves and embarking on his journey as Goldroom, singer-songwriter-producer-remixer Josh Legg today announced that his full-length debut, “West of the West,” would arrive Sept. 23 via Downtown/Interscope. With the news came the cool-as-an-ocean-breeze single “Silhouette,” a poolside jam if there ever was one. Unlike many of the singles from Goldroom’s three EPs (“Angeles,” “Embrace” and “It’s Like You Never Went Away”), this one features Legg on lead vocals, as does every song on the new album.
“In late 2015 things poured out in a way they just hadn’t before,” Legg says of writing the album. “Classic American songwriting is something I’ve tried hard to honor and push forward. Although I make electronic-based music, I think of this as Americana at its emotional core. I was aching to write something more simple and earnest, devoid of cynicism.” In the album announcement, he also explains that the title was inspired by President Teddy Roosevelt, who referred to California as “West of the West.” Says Legg, a Boston native: “It’s always resonated with me because it feels like a destination past the Wild West — an oasis where anything is possible. To me, ‘West of the West’ is also the Pacific Ocean, where so much of my life and inspiration lies.”
