Brittney Westover has been a longtime presence in L.A. music circles, first as a singer-songwriter, then as a backup singer and, with Maria DeLuca and Jillinda Palmer, co-fronting the “shoo-bop do-wop pop” ensemble the Damselles & the TC4, whose music (if not fashion sense and charisma) seemed snipped from the girl-group era. This week Westover releases a new solo EP, “The Reward,” which also throws back to those ostensibly simpler times. Working with collaborator Mike Escamillo and backed by a host of local luminaries, she’s fashioned seven keyboard-driven songs that sound about five decades young. The Brill Building songwriters are the obvious antecedent here; eschewing fancy production, she’s let the songs just breathe. And like that moment she meets “the boy of my dreams,” sometimes it’s fast breathing.
