Ears Wide Open: The Wrecks

What do you do when a friend has access to a studio for a couple of days? Record some songs, duh. Not really a band yet? Not a problem! At least not for The Wrecks. Nick Anderson (vocals), Aaron Kelley (bass), Nick Schmidt (guitar), Harrison Nussbaum (guitar) and Billy Nally (drums) had been together for two days when they decided to play around in a studio for free. Three days later they had an EP. Now with only three songs and less than a year as a band under their belt, the Wrecks are starting to gain momentum, with an upcoming tour with Nothing But Thieves in September after the release of their first single, “Favorite Liar.”
The L.A.-based band cites artists like The Strokes and Vampire Weekend as influences, and the single mingles pop-punk vocals (not the whiny kind) and indie guitar riffs with a big hook. The song is full of surprises and has a great build. However, one potential hit and two other songs — “Turn It Up” and “I Don’t Like You” — is hard to stretch, especially on tour. The band is planning on writing over the summer to take out fresh material on tour in the fall. Until then, the video for “Favorite Liar” gives a glimpse at their live show and some adorably fun times on the road. Hey, The Wrecks, can we be friends?
