Gaby Hernandez describes her music as “lovers rock and tropical soul,” a romantic summer cocktail that should be imbibed half-nude on a beach or while scattering rose petals on a bed. The songs on “Spirit Reflection,” her third album, flow between seductive, relaxing and spiritually nurturing with earthy rhythms and warm production that basically just make the listener feel comforted, like cozying up to her bosom. She says, “Central to all of my songs is the feeling of passion felt when we’re romantically connected to someone. Sometimes it’s truly ‘love’ and other times it’s simply desire, obsession, or infatuation. Or a combination of all of those. I find myself drawn to the scenarios that come up when people say that they’re ‘in love’ and I create songs around these feelings. Letting go, physical intimacy, and deep admiration are a few of the sentiments I explore in this new record.”
Dexter Story served as one of the main collaborators on these creations, and a slew of talented L.A. musicians also contributed writing, arrangements and performances to the record, including Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, GB (Gifted & Blessed), Benjamin Tierney, Ammoncontact, Carlos Niño, Tracy Wannomae, Alakoi Peete, Ryan Porter, Stuart Howard and Contact Field Orchestra. The double-LP features vocal and instrumental versions of the songs, and comes out on Mr. Bongo in 2017.
