The new single from the Washington, D.C.-bred, L.A.-based Brett is like standing under a waterfall after working all afternoon in 100-degree heat. “California Nights” is a lush 5 minutes of psych-pop, introduced by cascading keyboards and floating spectacularly into a chorus that never wears out its welcome. You can toss a coin to see which “California Nights” you like better, but this one comes from the mind of songwriter Mick Coogan, who once did business as the Dance Party and continues his prolific ways with guitarist Scott Dittrich, bassist Dave Kuehl and drummer Jon Jester.
Earlier this year, Brett released the dreamy LP “Mode” via the label Cascine, but Coogan already has more up his sleeve. He’s teamed up with songwriting house 10K Islands for the forthcoming EP, “Die Young.” Best not dwell on mortality during Coogan’s latest episode of popgazing, though; just find an orange-blue horizon.
