Warpaint has a new album, “Heads Up” coming out on Rough Trade Records on Sept. 23. The band reunited with producer Jacob Bercovici, who worked on their debut EP “Exquisite Corpse,” to flesh out what they created in their House on the Hill studio, their own homes and Papap’s Palace. Trying a new approach, Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, Stella Mozgawa and Theresa Wayman recorded in pairs and alone rather than as a full band, which brought more individual input into the final tunes. Mozgawa says, “The doors were a little more open in terms of what was accepted and what wasn’t, because we were sharing ideas so rapidly between us. The roles that each of us individually had — or had established — were a little more malleable.” It’s their danciest, poppiest material ever. That blissful doom that defined their early sound has been shed like a cocoon, and this butterfly is flying straight into the bright flashing colored lights of the nearest dancefloor.
