After his 2012 Brainfeeder debut “Breakthrough,” the Gaslamp Killer returns with “Instrumentalepathy,” out Sept. 16 via The Killer’s own freshly minted imprint, Cuss Records. He began work on this record while recovering from a near-fatal scooter accident in summer of 2013. Doped up on morphine, staples keeping his flesh together, the first five minutes of the album were actually recorded while recovering in bed. He then enlisted a gaggle of pals to bring his mad scientist experiments to life, including but not limited to Gonjasufi, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kid Moxie, Mophono, Amir Yaghmai and the Heliocentrics, Andres Renteria, Daedelus, Malcolm Catto and Blank Blue’s Niki Randa, whose voice appears on first single “Residual Tingles.” And it does tingle with heavy head-nodding drum breaks spliced with fervent percussion and ghoulish, haunted keys, epic strings, plus some of this-and-that world flavor, as if he let the multi-cultural spice rack spill over the whole thing just a little bit. Cue the howling wolf and a subdued nightmarish outro, as the Gaslamp Killer slinks away through dark shadows.
