As the story goes, one great DJ, Primo Pitino, gave a well-known DJ, Jonathan Tobin, a 45 cut by a vintage vinyl-loving other DJ working at San Francisco record shop Rooky Ricardo’s Records. The song was “Some Place” and this relatively unknown musician was Nick Waterhouse. Tobin spun the record all over the States and suddenly Nick Waterhouse was a name on everybody’s wish list. Now Waterhouse is on his third full-length record, “Never Twice,” which comes out Sept. 30 through Innovative Leisure. The new songs take Waterhouse’s predilection for mid-century R&B to a more jazzy, boogaloo party place. That means more congas, more rhythmic appeal and music that’s as catchy to the mind as it is compelling to the body. Waterhouse recorded these songs in San Francisco earlier this year, bringing his friend, producer Michael McHugh (Black Lips, Ty Segall, Allah-Las) up from Orange County with all his vintage recording equipment to capture the sound. The video for “Old Place” was filmed by Emma Pollard at Pappy and Harriet’s on a very warm, fun, late evening that shook the floorboards as the band boogied. Below, you can also hear “Katchi,” another stellar retro-modern track off “Never Twice,” featuring Leon Bridges on vocals. I don’t know what katchi is, but I want some too.
