Ears Wide Open: Red Rosamond

Red Rosamond

Red Rosamond professes to want to be the female 007. We have no idea how the L.A.-based Canadian singer handles a Walther PPK, but she has the look, and a couple of singles that could melt the ice in your cocktail faster than a Bond stare. Rosamond released her torchy first single “Looks Can Kill” in August and follows it up this week with “Damn,” an equally cinematic, horn-infused display of moxie. It might not stop all conversations in any lounge she’s headlining, but it’s an attention-getter, if her flaming red hair isn’t. Both the style and substance represent a shift for Rosamond — real name: Amanda Zelina — who from 2010 to ’14 released some good ol’ rock ’n’ blues under the name the Coppertone. The shift into the Red followed the singer-songwriter’s kerfuffle with her label; a couple of years ago, she crowd-funded $20,000 to buy her way out of the deal. As Red Rosamond, she merely projects a different kind of swagger. Shaken and stirred.
