BROKE LA — the kaleidoscopic local festival that began as a budget-beating alternative to Coachella and was formerly known as Brokechella — has moved the date for its 2017 event. And instead of being opposite one of the weekends of the big festival in Indio, the seventh annual BROKE LA will be one of the two Saturdays prior, April 1 or 8.

The festival trio of organizing groups (cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA, Brownies and Lemonade and Shifty Rhythms) also announced today that submissions are open for musical acts, visual artists, comedians, filmmakers, vendors and a new category for artists/innovators/“tech heads” who might be uncategorizable, “discovery.” Submissions are free until Dec. 1.

Another change: Saying it’s “a way of acknowledging the fluidity of genre in the contemporary music scene,” BROKE LA will no longer relegate genres to certain stages and will instead mix up the lineups.

Last year, BROKE LA moved to Imperial Art Studios in downtown L.A., but a location has not yet been announced for 2017.

The festival has also announced a partnership with the Sunstock Solar Festival to run certain stages and activities at the event off their solar-powered trailers. Besides the music and art, the festival will again offer a variety of street food, drinks and other activities such as photo booths, boutiques and the like.
