Like the songs on their mini-album “Whatever That Means,” released in April, Ramonda Hammer’s new single “Zombie Sweater” (out on Halloween! because it’s got “Zombie” in the title!) is like clenching and then un-clenching your fist. And then maybe clenching it again and taking a swing at whatever embodies your pent-up frustration. (And won’t hit back.) Frontwoman Devin Davis’ wounded, almost punch-drunk wailing is backed ferocious rhythms from Andy Hengl and Danny Louangxay and some equally biting leads from guitarist Justin Geter, whose tones seem to have materialized from a ’90s hangover. Loud/soft, aching/buoyant, pretty/not … Ramonda Hammer keeps all these dynamics in play, and makes them appetizing. The L.A. quartet has signed to the New Professor Music label and plan to release an EP and album next year.
