Wearing flip-flops, with American Spirits sticking out of his back pocket, Alex Izenberg sits at a church piano surrounded by flowers. His mood is morose, accompanied by strings in the brightly lit empty room. Captured live for the video, “Grace” comes from the songwriter’s new album, “Harlequin,” out Nov. 18 on Weird World/Domino. He’s got an interesting story. At age 13 his parents took him to buy a Fender at Guitar Center and Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes happened to be there. She thought he was so great that she bought him the guitar. His first band’s record came out on her label, Custard Records, and the band opened for Roger Daltry. After that tour, his band booted him and his girlfriend dumped him, which made him very sad. But sadness makes for good songwriting, nourishing the songs on “Harlequin.” On it you will find tales of love and loss inspired by the alternate reality of Los Angeles, with piano, strings and horns carrying his melodies.
