Sam France and Jonathan Rado have stepped it up for the new Foxygen album, “Hang,” to be released Jan. 20 on Jagjaguwar. They refer to it as their first “proper” studio recording, perhaps because a 40-plus-piece orchestra plays on every song. The orchestra was conducted by Trey Pollard, with some arrangements by Matthew E. White, both affiliated with Spacebomb Records in Virginia. Brian and Michael D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs provided the rhythm section, and Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips plays on a few tracks. The album was recorded on 2-inch tape at Electro Vox Studios in Los Angeles.

Now let’s talk about this fun video for “Follow The Leader,” directed by Cameron Dutra, who previously directed Foxygen’s “San Francisco” video. In it, France prances around followed by a group of people trying to copy his every move. It almost feels like an induction into a cult of some kind, paired with lyrics like “follow the leader and the leader is you” meant to seduce disciples into some next level silliness. It always starts with hugging in a field, that’s how they getcha.
