Monterrey, Mexico’s musical-hybrid quintet Kinky performed at the Echoplex on Friday night to an audience of dancers and swooners alike. They opened the night with their newest single “Decaparecer,” and fans were immediately energized by the group’s blend of electronica and Latin funk. Their 16-song set managed to bend and blend genres with accordion, conga, samples and funk riffs that kept the crowd moving. Although the band may not be a household name in the U.S., they have been nominated for Grammys both American and Latin and they retain a reputation as one of the most important bands in Latin America. Fans, especially the female ones, certainly knew this at the Echoplex as screams hit boy-band decibels each time singer Gil Cerezo or cowboy bassist Cesar Pliego perched at the edge of the stage. While Monterrey has an incredibly talented music scene, Kinky are easily one of the city’s most sonically diverse with hot-blooded rhythms, eclectic jazz funk, adapted hip-hop, and bilingual techno dance grooves.
Kinky were opened by DJ Mexican Dubwiser.
